COURSE TOPICS

You can develop a complete asset management program for your municipality or Indigenous community by taking our courses. Take the whole program, or select individual courses that apply best to your context. The program includes 5 courses covering:

  1. AM Policy & AM Roadmap

  2. Level of Service Assessment

  3. Risk Assessment (includes Climate Adaptation Assessment)

  4. Asset Management Culture & Managing Your Data

  5. Capital Plan & How to Engage Your Council (LoS & Risk courses are pre-requisites)


WHAT TO EXPECT IN EACH COURSE

  • Short, explanatory videos that can be viewed on your own time

  • 6-8 weeks to complete each course (expected level of effort is 1-2 hours per week)

  • Tools and templates included to build your asset management program with your data, tailored to your asset management needs

  • Technical support through the learning platform by the AIM Network team

  • Wrap up meeting via video call with AIM Network to review your documents

  • You’re encouraged to involve your whole asset management team in the learning process

COURSE OUTCOMES

    • Create an asset management policy that can be taken to council at the end of the course

    • Understand how policy principles are applied at decision-making

    • Create a specific and measurable list of activities for 2 years to grow and track your asset management program

    • Understand what levels of service are and how to measure them

    • Assess your current service levels, target service levels, and where the gaps are in services

    • Develop options and possible costs to close service gaps

    • Prepare a report for council to demonstrate level of service assessment

    • Understand how probability and consequences of failure impact project priority

    • Conduct a high-level risk assessment to narrow down priority projects for 5-year planning

    • Learn how to purposefully manage risk to balance priorities and available budgets

    • Assess your service risk from a range of climate impacts and compare adaptation options to the cost of doing nothing

    • Understand how asset management is a continuous process

    • Develop a continuous improvement program for asset management and assign responsibilities

    • Plan for changes in staff and responsibilities with robust documentation

    • Learn what activities are critical to update periodically and generate an information management plan

    • With demonstrations using included open-source AIM Network tools, learn how to update your information and adapt to changing asset management needs

    • Use your existing asset data and capital budgets to identify shortfalls in infrastructure investment

    • Understand the differences and pros vs. cons of replacement, rehabilitation, and renewal as infrastructure strategies

    • Identify where levels of service can be adjusted to extend replacement timelines

    • Understand how to develop materials for public engagement on infrastructure investment

    • Balance your 5-year projections with available investment and funding opportunities

    • Generate a 5-year capital report with defined yearly projects and identify critical finance, funding and service impacts of the decisions
